Our partners at Lincoln Network are heading to South by Southwest (SXSW)! Lincoln is continuing their discussion about viewpoint diversity in Silicon Valley’s tech sector by sitting down for an in-depth panel discussion. On Tuesday, March 13, Lincoln Network’s CEO, Garrett Johnson, will participate in the “Promoting Inclusion in Today’s Tech Industry” panel discussion as a part of the Innovation Policy Day 2018.
The panel is sponsored by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), and in addition to Johnson, panelists include Rachel Horn from CTA, Elizabeth Gore from Alice and Latasha Gillespie from Amazon Music.
The lack of diversity in the tech industry is a well-documented problem. Often times Silicon Valley is accused of being homogenous and exclusionary toward outside viewpoints and ideas. The backlash to the diversity memo written by a now-fired Google employee left many conservatives asking if Silicon Valley was also biased against political ideologies.
Lincoln Network produced a survey to measure viewpoint diversity among Silicon Valley’s technology sector, and the results painted the picture of an industry where conservative employees consistently feel like the system is stacked against them. Johnson will use these survey findings as a starting point for how tech giants to create a more inclusive environment and will be discussing the subject at SXSW. In forthcoming days, Lincoln will share recommendations on how to mitigate the problem of viewpoint exclusion in tech, and we hope you’ll join the SXSW conversation to add your insight into this evolving dialogue.
