Dem Congressman Won’t Call to Abolish ICE ‘Unless Somebody Tells Me How We’re Going To Replace it’

As some Democrats call for the dissolution of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency in the wake of chaos on the southern U.S. border, Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.) told Bold TV that he can’t support the push without an alternative in place.

“I’m not going to be calling for the dissolution of ICE unless somebody tells me how we’re going to replace it,” Suozzi told Bold TV. “Border security is a very real issue in this country, and the problems we’re seeing at the border are because of the fact that the Washington class has not gotten together to solve this problem. There’s a real problem at our borders. The port of entries, they’re overwhelmed.”

“These simplistic things like ‘Ban ICE’ or ‘Build a wall’ or ‘Kick everybody out of the country,’ none of this is simple,” Suozzi said. “We’re never going to solve these problems,” he continued, “unless we get beyond the finger-pointing, we get beyond the blame game and we figure out how do we address these problems. We need border security, we need to treat people like human beings as well. This is a problem that goes back 30 years in the United States of America, this is not a new phenomenon.”

When asked by Bold TV about the failed House attempt to pass an immigration bill this week, Suozzi called for a bipartisan approach to solving the border crisis.

“Let’s make this very clear, when you say ‘the House failed to pass,’ the Republicans failed to pass, because they refused to negotiate with the Democrats,” Suozzi told Bold TV. “This ‘compromised bill’ was a compromise amongst the Republicans. There was no conversation whatsoever with the Democrats. I want to make this very clear. I’m the vice chairman of the Problem Solvers Caucus, 24 Democrats and 24 Republicans trying to find common ground to solve these problems. People are sick and tired of these politicians, they’re sick of the Democrat-Republican business, they want us to solve problems. And there are a lot of good people in Congress who want to solve these problems, who came up with compromises as to how to address this immigration problem with strong border security, with efforts to treat the DACA children fairly, that 90 percent of Americans support these kids and support the idea of  them having a pathway to citizenship. But we need to do this on a bipartisan basis, and the idea of just one side doing this themselves will never work. And there are a lot of good, reasonable people. We just can’t put anything put on the floor.”
