Corey Lewandowski, the former campaign manager for President Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, said the current crop of likely 2020 Democratic presidential challengers will have a tough time appealing to Middle America.

“Whether that’s Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Michael Bloomberg, you know the mayor of South Bend, Indiana [Pete Buttigieg], you know there’s going to be a real handful will emerge as the top tier, and you know they are so far to the left,” said Lewandowski, who joined Bold TV to discuss his new book, “Trump’s Enemies: How the Deep State Is Undermining the Presidency.”

“They are so out of touch with the mainstream states that they will perform more poorly than Hillary Clinton did,” Lewandowski continued. “That’s difficult to fathom. You have to remember the blow out that Donald Trump had in the election was so significant that he could have lost the state of Florida and still been elected President. That’s how much he destroyed Hillary in this election and the Democrats are looking to nominate a person who is more progressive than Hillary Clinton.”

Are Some in Trump’s Admin Working Against Him? Corey Lewandowski Weighs In

In last month’s congressional elections, Republicans performed poorly among women, relative to men, though Lewandowski said the GOP does an effective job at elevating female leaders within its rank.

“The chairman of the party is a woman, and it’s not the Democrats,” Lewandowski said. “Ronna Romney McDaniel is the chairman of the Republican Party. You have a number of women in senior leadership positions both in the cabinet and in this administration including Ivanka Trump in Kellyanne Conway. So we lead by example not by what the Democrats do.”

Still, Lewandowski concede that the Republican Party needed to better outreach with women and other groups as well.

“Well, it’s not just women it’s African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, its Asian-Americans,” Lewandowski said. “The Republican Party has to expand the base if they want to be successful. And I look at guys like John James from Michigan who ran a very good race, lost that race in Michigan but he is the future of the Republican Party and the Republicans have to embrace that.”
