Monique Coleman, star of “High School Musical,” told Bold Life she thinks Disney’s “High School Musical” series was very diverse, especially for its time. “I don’t think it’s as diverse as it could be, but it was 13 years ago, and I think for where it was, I think that it did a great job of representing different people,” she said. “It was the beginning, for sure.”
The actress and UN youth activist also gave advice to young stars who seem to have had trouble adjusting to fame, like Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez, and said it’s essential to have a strong sense of self and “that you say ‘no’ a lot.”
“I wish that I didn’t want to be chosen so badly,” Coleman said of her past self. “When I started out, I really wanted to be picked…every role I got felt like it validated my existence. And now, I don’t feel that way.”
We also discussed Coleman’s new show, “Gimme Mo,” which covers issues like the pressures of fame, youth homelessness, human trafficking and much more. You can learn more about the show and watch “Gimme Mo” here.
