Minimum Wage, Facebook Politics and F*ck Fifteen

Is a $15 minimum wage a disaster for our economy?

This video, from the organization F*ck Fifteen, makes the argument that a larger minimum wage will be hugely detrimental to our country.

The video argues that when starting wages are at $15, the next level up position will ask for more money, then the next level up and on and on until the company has to pay exponentially higher wages. When this happens, the company will have to shut down or, as the video suggests, send jobs oversees to China to continue to make affordable products.

The video ends with a factory worker in China saying, “Those Americans don’t understand economics” and “China supports the fight for 15!”

Do you agree with this argument?

Organizations like Free and Fed Up support this stance and reposted this video, saying, “You might get that raise to $15… if your job isn’t sent to China.” The video spoke to Free and Fed Up, a small-government advocacy group, with its ideas and its format.

This video is part of a larger trend of making politics and policy conversations less formal and more relatable to younger people. Watching and sharing short Facebook videos is a huge difference from tuning into C-SPAN.

Packaging political ideas into less formal, relatable formats is a great way to pull in a larger audience and educate people who may not be interested in politics. The F*ck Fifteen video shows an abstract policy idea in a practical way and how it can affect our lives.

With hundreds of shares and comments, the video is engaging its audience and sharing the organization’s ideas in a different way.

Have you been seeing more political content on Facebook? Do you think political content packaged into shorter clips is an effective way to engage more people in a conversation? Let us know in the comments!
