Rectenwald’s recent book, “Springtime for Snowflakes: ‘Social Justice’ and Its Postmodern Parentage” centers on the pervasiveness of social justice culture. He sees the movement as a problem that doesn’t come just from the students, but “has been initiated and inaugurated and furthered by faculty activists mostly, and administration.” Rectenwald and Stepman agree that the social justice ideology has impacted the ability for college campuses to embrace free speech and thought.
Stepman proposes that the cause for bias on campuses is the introduction of identity politics into nonpolitical aspects of our lives. Stepman told Bold TV, “It’s counterproductive to the bonds that we have with each other as citizens, because it encourages everyone to be viewed just through the lens of their identity, where they are on the sort of oppression olympics hierarchy rather than as an individual, as a person first, and then we get to the political ideas as fellow citizens.”
