We all secretly dream of being a famous influencer who receives merch boxes from our favorite companies. While we might not all be able to receive boxes from higher-end companies—e.g., Christian Louboutin or Bentley—, it’s entirely possible to become a micro influencer while still in college. Companies love to use social media and influencers for free PR. Often, themed boxes of merchandise (usually including newer products) are mailed out with a set of guidelines on how to post and spread the word. Are PR boxes effective? Through apps like Instagram and TikTok, the company gets good publicity, and the influencer gets a larger following and free stuff. It’s a win-win situation.
How to get PR boxes
Here are some of the best places to look for PR box opportunities:
- Campus Trendsetters. Owned by the college-based media group HerCampus, Campus Trendsetters aims to help partner young people (typically women, as the products are usually beauty related) with companies. Often, they will send themed boxes out to students in exchange for social media posts, online information sessions or gifting programs. Companies they’ve recently partnered with include Coke, Dior and Pinterest.
- Pixi Beauty. Pixi Beauty has an ambassador program that asks you to honestly review their products in exchange for PR boxes full of their makeup and skin care. In the past, they’ve sent out brand new eyeshadow palettes, entire lip gloss lines and skin care sets.
- Influenster. From food to games, Influenster will send you PR boxes of items you wish to review. After receiving the box, you leave an honest review on their website. Then, you have the option to post on socials for the chance of Influenster reposting (and tagging you). So, even if you don’t want to receive a box, it’s also a great place to see honest reviews of products you might want.
Be a self-starter!
Brands and small businesses alike are constantly posting about how they’re looking for brand ambassadors or models. By simply DMing a company or commenting on their post, they might select you to receive a box. (Some of the best hashtags to search for this under include #PRBox or #brandambassador.) Another way to win the attention of a brand you love is by tagging and following them on social media. By simply tagging them, they have a good chance of seeing you. Sometimes, this can lead to brands reposting you or sending you free goods!
