The U.S. and Canada have classified the Chinese government’s actions toward a group called the Uyghurs as genocide, but you don’t hear about this in the media. Executive director of Stop the Demand Sophia Fisher joined Bold TV to discuss the Uyghur genocide and what we can do about it here in the U.S.
What is the Uyghur genocide?
There are about 11 million Uyghur Muslims in China. It is estimated that over 1 million Uyghur Muslims are being put into detention camps in China’s Northwest region, where they are raped, tortured and abused.
What can we do to help the Uyghur Muslims?
“We need to be speaking out about it on social media. We need to be holding our government officials accountable,” Fisher said. Chinese officials are brushing off these claims, saying they are implementing re-education camps and that is it is helpful for the economy in the Northwest region of China. But that’s not true, according to the reports. So what do we need to be doing?
How can we make a difference when everything we buy is from China?
“I think we need to be buying things made in America,” Fisher said. Many big corporations are denying the fact that they are outsourcing in China. But Fisher said we know from insider former detainees that this is not the case.
Why is human trafficking still a problem?
Human trafficking is a global issue. Part of Fisher’s career has been dedicated to combating human trafficking. It doesn’t only affect the U.S. but also every single country in the world. It is the fastest-growing crime, estimated to generate over $150 billion annually.
