Let’s face it, you are likely spending more and more time at home these past few years. This has probably given you more time than ever to decorate your home just how you like. And for some, this means adorning their living space with plants, plants, and more plants. Here are some benefits of gardening.

Going into debt – for plants?

Everyone’s mental health has been taking a hit lately, and many are relying on plants to improve their mood. According to trees.com, 88 percent of Americans say that plant-keeping has improved their mental health, but the price tag is not cheap. 27 percent said they have gone into debt funding their plant-keeping hobby. Forget about going into debt for kids or even pets; some people are going all-in to raise plants.

Money spent on plants ranged from $5 to $2,000, but most kept within the $5 to $200 range.

As the pandemic wanes, the vast majority of people surveyed are committed to keeping plants for the foreseeable future – even though the price tag is heavy. 96 percent of people consider themselves a plant-keeper for life, with 98 percent of men and 96 percent of women saying they will continue to plant keep after the pandemic.

Making money keeping plants

But, there is a way to get a return on investment beyond mental health benefits. According to Investopedia, “For example, one pound of organic tomatoes from Whole Foods costs as of July 2021 $2.99, but a package of organic, heirloom tomato seeds can yield multiple tomato plants over time, costs $3.99. To put it into perspective: one tomato plant may equal 10lbs to 30lbs of tomatoes.”

Even a small plot in the backyard can yield plenty of herbs and vegetables. And, despite the costs of maintaining a garden, you will likely get more than what you put into it when you harvest.

So, indoor plant-keeping may not be a moneymaker, but using that same for gardening has some financial benefits while still giving you a mental health boost.
