What is the line between free speech and hate speech? Sarah Casey, COO of GenCo Legal, stopped by Bold Biz to discuss the different approaches that social media platforms are taking to curb abuse and dangerous rhetoric. Casey said that social media giants YouTube and Facebook “are both making a statement” but that they are “taking opposite positions”, with Facebook siding on the side of free speech, and YouTube taking a strong stance against online trolls.
Casey also discussed the NFL kneeling scandal and said that the NFL are well within their legal right to ban players from kneeling during the national anthem. When it comes to free speech, Casey argued that no organization or company is legally bound to censor inflammatory opinions and that the law “is very clear that free speech is a bedrock of our democracy.”
