ESPN Analyst Eduardo Perez Talks MLB

Photographer: Jose Morales

Eduardo Peréz grew up around baseball. It all started with being the son of a major league baseball player. He then rose through his own ranks, playing in college, then professionally and finally in the big leagues. After retiring, he took this lifetime of knowledge into coaching. But as much as he learned about the game inside the lines, he believes it teaches valuable lessons outside the lines, too. He is now an ESPN analyst, paying respect to the game he loves. And he joins Bold TV to discuss how baseball is intricate yet relatable.

Learn from an analyst, follow the numbers

The game of baseball has changed since Babe Ruth was hitting home runs. But one aspect is still important: numbers. Analysts discuss data to take the “luck factor” out of how players perform. They track minute details about every player. What is the pitcher’s spin rate as he throws the ball? What is the velocity of the ball as it jumps off the batter’s bat? These numbers inform everyone from broadcasters to sports agents. They can forecast the future of baseball and the future of players. Even environmental factors come into play with different humidity levels in Miami or Colorado. All data counts.

It doesn’t take much to become a fan

Pérez left television to coach for more than two years with the Miami Marlins and Houston Astros. But he returned to being an analyst because he saw baseball in a different light. He says it’s an honor to talk about players when he knows how difficult it is to play daily. And anyone can become a baseball fan. If you don’t know much about it, Pérez says you can pick one number to follow. Focusing on the batter’s OPS or the pitcher’s WHIP gives you an investment in the game, and you learn the story behind the player. Check out the interview to learn more about the sport. Maybe you’ll love it as much as Pérez.
