Advice for College Grads on the Job Search

Finding a job out of college is challenging enough. Add the events of 2020 onto that, and the job search becomes more complicated. Many companies are on a hiring freeze while they endure the effects of the pandemic. Others are realizing the large expense that comes with an office, so they’re moving toward a remote workforce. How can these graduates levy this situation for their advantage? In problems, there are opportunities. David Grasso and Julia Sun of Bold TV discuss how grads can break into their field in uncertain times.

3 job search tips for college grads

  1. Use the internet. There are plenty of websites to help with the job search. Make sure you fully use the power of online communities. LinkedIn, Indeed and Upwork hold endless opportunities. The downside is that you have international competition. But don’t give up! Keep applying and reaching out.
  2. Freelance gigs and internships are your best friend. If you’re attracted to a certain institution, company or organization, the hardest part is getting a foot in the door. Your best bet is a freelance gig, internship or independent contract work. And if you need extra work to pay the bills, don’t be afraid to pair your work with another part-time gig.
  3. Embrace work from home. Remote working is rising in popularity. You may have dreamed that you’d be in an office. But don’t worry that your first job may be from a computer. Companies are looking for people who can be flexible and work well remotely.

The first job is the hardest to get

Recent grads, don’t be embarrassed if you’re out of work. Most people are in new and uncomfortable situations. So you’re not alone.
