What’s Happening With the Georgia Recount?

Georgia has been on our minds throughout the 2020 presidential election. The state made headlines as they made the historic flip from red to blue and as Georgia’s Secretary of State called for a statewide hand recount because of the close margin. People on both sides of the aisle believe the voting system needs a total makeover, but they probably disagree on why Georgia’s results have been so contentious. Was voter fraud the root issue? Or should we blame it on voter suppression? Bold TV host David Grasso sat down with Turning Point USA spokesperson Isabel Brown and Democratic strategist Max Burns to talk about this key moment in U.S. history.

Different views on Georgia’s problem

Brown finds it “incredibly alarming” that media outlets claim there is no evidence of voter fraud in this election. She offers the example of Michigan alone having over 200 pages of signed, sworn statements from poll/postal workers who encountered or participated in voter fraud. On the other hand, Burns says Georgia’s problem is a long history of voter suppression. He provides examples of absentee and polling station voting being more difficult than they should be, and his view is that these problems affect Democratic voters because of a system installed by Republicans in the state. Ultimately, Burns disagrees with Brown, saying that the right is simply stunned by the flipped state.

Common ground: Change the voting system

Both sides of this debate can find common ground on one thing: frustration with the nation’s voting system. Brown offers that there should be a specified and clear standard for elections. She says you can have the Dominion voting system; she’ll take pen and paper and a voter ID. Burns says the biggest issue is that some people have difficulty getting a photo ID. He believes this problem could be solved by making IDs free and easy to get.
