4 Cybersecurity Trends for 2021

All of our lives are intertwined with Big Data, social media and everything else in the cyber world. We can’t get away from it. But with the internet comes dangers, and cybersecurity is essential. Philip Michael sat down with Scott Lyons of Red Lion to discuss what we need to know about the cybersecurity world as we enter 2021.

What’s the 4-1-1 in cybersecurity?

  1. Senate Bill 3456. This bill is trying to establish data privacy as an inalienable right for the individual. Small businesses are struggling, and they have to make sales in order to stay afloat. But they also have to meet privacy regulations and protect the public’s information.
  2. Job demand in the information security community. Lyons says this industry has a skills gap, and around 2.7 million jobs need to be filled. This community is migrating toward automated systems, but it still needs skilled workers to watch the network and protect the clients.
  3. Understanding the trade-offs of social media platforms. Big businesses such as Apple, Facebook and Google use data as a commodity. You can use these platforms for free, but there’s a trade-off, or a catch. These platforms have an ad-driven model that uses our data. Is everyone aware of the risks we take online?
  4. Learn to cut bad habits. Lyons says the worst cybersecurity habit is oversharing. It’s time to leave that in 2020. Why? If it’s on the internet, it’s there forever. Lyons says the Wayback Machine makes it easy to go back and pull your Tweets or web posts that you thought were long gone. You don’t want an old mistake to come back and ruin your reputation later. Learn the art of drafts.
