If you’ve looked up song lyrics in the last nine years, you’ve probably come across Genius.

Eddie Washington, the Recruiting Lead at Genius, joined Bold Business this morning to discuss diversity at his company. Watch here on our Facebook page.

The site

Genius, formerly known as Rap Genius, is a community-run media company that was created in 2009.

When Rap Genius began, it focused on annotating clever rap lyrics for listeners, since rap music frequently carries meanings below the surface. The website still annotates lyrics, but Rap Genius changed its name to Genius in 2014, expanding its knowledge to other genres.

How it works

Genius is a community-based website, so it allows users to contribute their knowledge in lyric annotations. Users have a music IQ that increases when they correctly annotate a lyric. Users can also increase their IQ when they correct another user’s annotation.

Editors and Moderators ensure that the annotations are correct, allowing music lovers to quickly share and compile knowledge.

Genius is currently the world’s biggest collection of song lyrics and musical knowledge, and its website has more than 100 million users each month.

Working for Genius

Eddie Washington, the recruiting lead for Genius, has worked with the company for two years.

There’s a list of current employees on the site, which features annotations that explain what each employee does.

Genius offers a variety of perks for its employees — from health insurance to paid time off — and is run by a small team.

If you’re interested in working for Genius, check out their current job postings here.
