These days, Roblox is just about everywhere. It’s the most recent kid-friendly sensation, often hailed as a metaverse, despite no integration with blockchain technology. Though, dropping an avatar in a three-dimensional virtual space won’t be Roblox’s only similarity to blockchain sandboxes soon enough. The team behind the game wants to hire a Web3 Senior Software Engineer. So it seems like Roblox NFTs could be coming shortly.
Roblox NFTs and web3 integration
The job listing doesn’t explicitly mention NFTs. However, responsibilities include getting the Roblox Marketplace ready for web3 integration. “As a senior engineer you will help Roblox Marketplace to be web3 ready and support billions of items and transactions to happen both on the blockchain and Roblox,” reads the listing. It’s safe to assume that “items on the blockchain” refers to in-game assets sold as non-fungible tokens.
Though Roblox is more or less implicitly considered a “metaverse,” the team intends to make it explicit. Part of the job description is to “help decide the future of web3 in Roblox.”
Roblox and the metaverse
The shift to web3 tech is a natural progression for Roblox. The game has partnered with brands like Forever 21 to create exclusive outfits for avatars. And Paris Hilton made her own server to throw a virtual New Year’s Eve party in 2021. Hilton’s Roblox metaverse has had almost 544,000 visitors since its release. In an interview with CNBC, the hotel heiress sang the praises of Roblox’s application as a metaverse.
“At the Neon Carnival we had almost half a million people there and in the real life party there was 5,000,” she said. “That’s the power of the metaverse where you can have people from all around the world be able to enjoy and experience things that are usually, you know, exclusive events.”
It seemed like Roblox integrating with blockchain technology was inevitable. Now the only question is, does this make Roblox the biggest blockchain game in the world?
