“I was told black boys aren’t in.” Broderick Hunter is an actor and model who has been featured in Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren campaigns, but when he began modeling, he faced rejection from numerous agencies. Now, the fashion industry is more diverse than ever, and with more people of color walking the runways, Hunter says it’s harder for models to make a name for themselves in the fashion world.
“We have so many great people at once and so [much] great representation that there are things that are happening where it’s not exactly a lot of quality, it’s just more quantity,” Hunter told Bold Life.
Now that social media is so popular, it can greatly impact an aspiring model’s career. Hunter says it’s important to “use your platform in a way where you can create.” Since “people are blowing up off selfies now,” new models may have difficulty posing in front of a photographer, Hunter told us. With the increase of models getting booked through social media sites like Instagram, Hunter hosts a workshop where he teaches models how to pose and capture the light when being photographed.
