Valuable LinkedIn Tips Everyone Should Know

Since the pandemic, professionals aren’t able to host networking events in-person. As we explore and attend virtual options, now is the time for everyone to update their LinkedIn profiles. LinkedIn users are on the platform to build professional connections and relationships. Since people are working from home, they’re looking to connect online. Alyssa Merwin, the VP of sales solutions at LinkedIn, joined Bold TV to share some helpful LinkedIn tips everyone should use.

Make your LinkedIn stand out

First things first, you should have a profile picture on your Linkedin. “People are nine times more likely to be engaged on the platform if they have a picture,” Merwin says. Not only should you have a picture, but you’ll also want to make sure it’s a professional one. It’s important that your picture is representing yourself in the best light, especially if you’re looking for a job.

Once you’ve chosen your photo, it’s time to understand who your target audience will be. Ask yourself, why did you make a LinkedIn profile? Are you looking for a job? More clients? There are a lot of different professionals on the social network, and their content differs. Once you answer these questions, Merwin says you’ll be able to “build out your profile appropriately.”

Avoid these mistakes!

Avoid reaching out to people with no context. If you’d like to connect with a professional, start by reacting to their posts or comments. Merwin suggests “warming up” the relationship before sending out private messages. She says it’s a great way to start a two-way dialogue. Once you have that frequent dialogue going, it’s safer to approach them in a private message. Another thing you can do is ask a mutual connection for an introduction. This can increase your chances for a reply.  

Merwin also says many people on LinkedIn reach out with messages that are not personalized or relevant to the recipient. This creates a bad experience for everyone. Instead, do your research and write a message that includes details the recipient would care about.
