You’ve probably heard about the #FreeBritney movement. This conversation came to light after the New York Times released a documentary called “The Framing of Britney Spears.” The film discussed how Britney Spears was forced from being an all-American girl to one of the world’s biggest popular music artists. It also highlights how her father has full control over her estate and career through the power of conservatorship. Documentaries like this are opening up conversations and revealing the behind-the-scenes lives of high-profile people.
What is a conservatorship?
A conservator – in this case, Spears’ dad – is “a court-appointed individual who handles financial or daily life affairs of a conservatee,” according to Cornell Law. This documentary showed how people were taking advantage of Spears and skewing the public opinion of her. The people around this pop-star were framing her in controversy, and we all got a front-row seat to her public breakdown. Now fans are finally able to see that it wasn’t all her doing. They say that Spears deserves to be free to make her own decisions without her conservators’ grip. So, people are using the hashtag #FreeBritney.
Documentaries are changing narratives
The documentary also focuses on how the media and paparazzi over-sexualized Spears and stalked her every move. For so long, we always heard one narrative. Britney Spears was the pop star who came out with hit songs back-to-back. Then, she was the celebrity who “cheated” on Justin Timberlake. Finally, she became the unstable woman who had a massive breakdown in front of our very eyes. But documentaries like this are giving us more to the story.
Do you think Britney still needs a conservatorship? And are there any other celebs who would be the good subject of a documentary? Let us know what you think.
