This Is the Powerful Story of ‘Power Book 3: Raising Kanan’

Bold Life host Shaysayss wants to keep you in the know on the trendiest premieres. And, of course, binge-worthy TV shows are always noteworthy! So, check out Bold Life’s exclusive interview with Mekai Curtis, Omar Epps and the rest of the “Power Book” cast as the franchise prequel “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” premieres Sun., July 18, on STARZ at 8 p.m. EST.

What is “Raising Kanan” about?

Created by Sascha Penn, “Raising Kanan” presents the childhood of Kanan Stark at 15 years old in 1991, growing up in South Jamaica Queens.

In the first “Power Book,” Kanan Stark, played by 50 Cent, is the mentor and adversary of Tommy and Ghost. Unfortunately, Stark dies in episode eight of season five due to a shootout. After a day of teaching Tariq how to sell drugs, Kanan was arrested by the police; he attempted to escape before he was shot and killed.

But “Power Book III” takes a deeper dive into Kanan’s life with his family and friends. He lives with his single mom, Raquel (Patina Miller), who runs the drug streets of New York City; his cousin Jukebox (Hailey Kilgore); and his two uncles, Lou Lou (Malcolm Mays) and Marvin (London Brown). The story takes us through the journey of Kanan’s confidence and his desire to learn the family business instead of taking on a new career.

Sascha Penn says “Power Book III” can stand alone.

In the interview, Sascha Penn shares that “Power Book III” is one of those books with its own developed storyline that can stand alone as a separate series.

“We see this as the first true spinoff … You don’t have to have watched one minute of ‘Power Book I’ to be able to watch ‘Raising Kanan,’” he said. “ You don’t need any prior knowledge about these characters in this world or anything. You can just pick it up, episode one of ‘Raising Kanan’ and be fully engaged and fully caught up.”

Kilgore, Epps, Miller, Brown, Mays and Curtis also share their views and excitement for the show’s premiere. Check out the interview above.
