Since the passing of rock legend, David Bowie, the fashion world has most definitely made a decision that 2016 is going to be the year of revolution, style, development, achievement, and hope. Which is inspired one of the most interesting decades of fashion in general, the 80s. A time of exploration, punk rock, hard makeup, and crossing lines to what is ‘normal’ to what is redefining. The Saint Laurent Maison has absolutely done that with their own homage to their founder, Yves Saint Laurent.
Hedi Slimane, creative director of Saint Laurent has made the big decision to reintroduce that Dynasty fans like myself would adore; shoulder pads, lots of lame, color, red lipstick, major exaggeration and high belted waists. Slimane gave the audience a little taste of the 80s star studded, glam fest during the Saint Laurent pre-show in February in Los Angeles; which seamlessly carried over through Paris Fashion Week. Through out every look Slimane took a page out of every Saint Laurents 80’s collection. Reminding us of the days when Paulina Porizkova, Karen Alexander, Iman, Elle Macpherson, and Carol Alt would grace the runways.
The show was held in an 18th century French tradition on the Rue de l’Universite layered by beautiful marble that Coco Chanel would gasp over. The models graced the staircase by wearing these impeccable, beautifully-fine fitted, ostrich leather skin tight dresses that Slimane proved she could do it better than anyone in the business. Each and every model came down with some detail of the slick back hair and a metallic accessory while wearing dresses that provided an off the shoulder style ruched by beautiful French tulle.
During the development of the collection, Slimane also reintroduced the Saint Laurent signature leather jumpsuit and pants suit which was tailored into more of a slim cigarette pant and jacket belted with some degree of gold accessory. There is word on the street that Slimane will depart from the stylish fashion house but there is no confirmation. If that is the case, Slimane has made her departure in grand style.
