The government appears to be using big tech to violate Americans’ constitutional rights.
Recently uncovered and leaked documents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) prove big tech’s collusion with the government. The documents implicate America’s most powerful law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and DHS. The documents also implicate the Biden White House, suggesting all these institutions engaged in collusion with big tech platforms. What is the end goal of this collusion? To censor stories and information that your government rulers don’t like.
The documents were released in court and unnamed sources leaked them to The Intercept. The leaked documents show tech companies like Meta and Twitter created special portals for government agencies. So, why does this matter? Well, because this enabled the FBI or DHS to instantly target and take down content government officials considered disinformation.
A backward approach
The same organizations specifically designed to go after threats and terrorists are being turned inward. Based on the reports, it seems the agencies are focused on silencing Americans who contradicted official government narratives. Big tech providing a gateway for them complicates matters for American citizens. Not only is this behavior problematic, but it’s also unconstitutional.
The first amendment bars the government from deciding what is true or false for us. It doesn’t matter whether it’s online or anywhere else. Regardless of medium, there’s a good reason for concern: oftentimes, the biggest and most destructive lies originate from the government.
Just think about the alleged weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. More recently, think of the misinformation from government officials concerning the Hunter Biden laptop story. Or the origins of Covid or the vaccines’ ability to prevent infection and transmission. We could go on and on. More so than ever before, it’s crucial to understand where you get your news from.
The fallout from big tech’s collusion
The Constitution’s First Amendment forbids the government from violating Americans’ free speech rights. Nor can it push private parties or tech platforms to do so.
Regardless of which political party you support, we should all agree on this. We should all demand an end to these censorship practices and refuse to support any politician who endorses them. As we’ve seen throughout history, without the freedom to speak, there’s no freedom at all.
