Does virtual reality have a place in medicine? Brian Ferguson’s company Arena Labs uses technology to complement and continue human potential. According to Ferguson, the company works to explore how “technology [amplifies] how we can impact the way that we live.”
These ideas can be applied anywhere, but for now, Arena Labs is focused on the medical world. Arena Labs has been working with the Cleveland Clinic to incorporate virtual reality into the training of doctors. The company wants to help doctors manage their fear and anxiety in a high-stress situation, like an emergency room.
Medical students don’t get many chances to learn to handle high-risk environments. Emergencies are obviously not the best learning situations. So how can we train for this? By simulating a high-risk situation using immersive video of surgeries and VR headsets.
This helps doctors “learn spatial and situational awareness,” according to Ferguson. Running through situations like this helps doctors-in-training practice the emotional intelligence and the medical skills needed.
The possibilities of virtual reality in medicine are endless; we can’t wait to see what Ferguson and his company do.
