Let’s talk about renovation costs. Maybe you took advantage of new low interest rates to buy a house, or you’re finally getting around to some projects that you’ve been waiting to do. Before you start renovating, you should know that major items are now in short supply and could cost you a lot of extra time and money.
A shortage of wood
In fact, wood is the hardest item to come by these days. Thanks to the pandemic, lumber yards are having a hard time with shipping. Plus, in 2020, there’s been a lot of wildfires. In Oregon alone, we lost enough wood to build 1 million homes. As a result, lumber prices are skyrocketing. If it isn’t an emergency, maybe you might want to wait a little while before you start doing projects around the house.
Windows and doors
Windows and doors are the next hardest thing to find. Part of the problem is demand: People bought up absolutely everything they could find at the start of the pandemic. But we can also blame a lack of window and door manufacturers right here in America. But hey, if you’re looking for a new industry to break into, maybe try creating custom windows and doors. I’m sure you can find a lot of desperate customers right now!
Kitchen appliances
Now, if you want to upgrade your kitchen appliances, you also might want to wait. Everyone has become an amateur stay-at-home chef, and during the lockdown, they bought fancy new stoves, air fryers and dishwashers. But if you don’t mind a couple of scratches or dents, look into used options for large appliances. They’ll be easier to find and more affordable than something brand new.
Furniture
Next, if you thought finding a new microwave was hard, try walking into an Ikea right now. If you didn’t buy that new couch or dining room early last year, you’re probably out of luck. Many furniture stores lack supply, and even if you can find something, it could take a really long time to get to your house. Thankfully, there are lots of vintage and secondhand stores full of options. Plus, you could check out Craigslist, Facebook marketplace or Etsy if you don’t want to leave your house.
