It feels like the 2020 election just happened yesterday, but columnists and voters are already talking about the 2024 presidential election. So, with still two years left before 2024, why are we suddenly focusing on it? And if we all suddenly care now, who are some of the prime candidates? These are some of the questions I’ve been processing as I’ve seen article after article already discussing the next step in the future of the United States.

Why are all eyes suddenly on the 2024 presidential election?

All eyes turned on the 2024 candidacy following news that Former President Donald J. Trump launched a new media platform, TRUTH Social—already commanding more national attention than any other potential 2024 GOP candidate. Therein, according to NBC, the question isn’t when Trump will start campaigning; it’s whether he’ll stop. Trump has continued to flood inboxes with near-daily fundraising appeals for his political action committee, “Save America,” which sits on nearly $90 million. So, the former president’s public voice has driven the forward-facing attention to the 2024 presidential election. As we look to the future, here are some of the facts of the situation:

1. Trump is likely to run.

2. Trump is likely to be the Republican nominee.

3. We should expect current President Biden to make a go at a second term.

4. Biden is likely to be a top pick for the Democratic nominee.

What are the polls saying?

According to a new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll, and in a hypothetical 2024 rematch, Former President Trump leads President Biden in Iowa by 11 percentage points. This specific poll came out as Biden’s approval rating among Iowans sits near its lowest rate since he took office in January.

But as we advance, Biden and his party look poised for a rebound after the House passed a $1.2 trillion “hard” infrastructure bill. In addition, they have worked on an encouraging economic report, showing stronger-than-expected job growth.

In October, Trump, 75, visited Des Moines, holding a rally that drew thousands to the Iowa State Fairgrounds amid speculation he was laying the groundwork for another White House run. But Biden, 78, is just ending the first year of his first term. At a news conference in March, the president said he planned to run for reelection but also said he was a “great respecter of fate” and has never planned anything for sure. He has not returned to the state since campaigning there ahead of the 2020 election.

Who else should we expect to see?

Besides the apparent nominees of Biden and Trump, the rest of the playing field has weeded out to be downright tiny. For the GOP so far, it’s looking like former Vice President Mike Pence, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Sens. Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, Tom Cotton, and others. Recently, a highlighted topic of debate has been the question of who will win the GOP: DeSantis, Christie, or Trump? If you ask me, after looking at all the possible candidates in the coming two years, we may need to reconsider taking the ‘G’ out of the GOP.
