Spring is here, and summer is right around the corner. Summertime may be one of the best times of the year to spend time in your home, but it can also be one of the most challenging seasons to endure there if you aren’t careful. High temperatures and high humidity can take their toll on your comfort levels and wear down your indoor air quality, but there are several ways you can prevent these issues from arising or at least reduce their impact on you. Here are a few ways to beat the heat and stay comfortable in your home this summer.

Use fans to circulate fresh air

There’s no substitute for air conditioning. But on those muggy days when you just can’t crank up your thermostat, try setting up a few fans around your house to keep it cool and circulate some fresh air. You can even set them on timers so they turn on and off automatically. That’s great for households with forgetful family members! For optimal cooling, place one fan at each end of a room or in opposite corners.

Avoid cooking indoors if possible

If you can avoid cooking inside, your home will be much cooler. Instead of turning on a stove or oven and heating up your kitchen, prepare foods outside on a grill or in an outdoor kitchen if you can. Definitely avoid using your oven if you can. For dishes that require a stovetop, you can reduce indoor temperatures by opening doors and windows while using your devices.

Protect yourself from the sun

When you’re planning your summer activities, be sure you’re also planning your protection from sun damage. The sun is strong, and sometimes we don’t realize how dangerous it can be because of our busy schedules. Don’t get burnt out! Give yourself a fighting chance by protecting yourself and your family with sunscreen. Make sure it has an SPF 30 or higher rating before applying. And, wear it all day long.

Use the right air conditioning system

Make sure you’re using an air conditioner that’s the right size for the area it’s cooling. If it isn’t strong enough, the AC won’t cool your living space properly. But if it’s too powerful, it’ll drive up your electric bill unnecessarily. Find a balance so you can stay comfortable without breaking the bank.

Sleep cool with cotton bedding

Cotton allows air to move freely, making it a great material to help beat the heat. Linen is another natural material that is a great summer option. Whatever you pick, just make sure it’s light and breathable.
