Are Millennials Changing Politics?

Twitter’s co-founder and former CEO, Jack Dorsey, has a new social media platform called Bluesky that just entered closed beta. Ever since Elon Musk took control of Twitter, alternatives to the platform started popping up left and right. And now, TechCrunch reports Dorsey’s new social media platform could become available to the public shortly. Here’s everything we know about Jack Dorsey’s new platform, Bluesky.

Jack Dorsey started working on Bluesky while still Twitter CEO.

Bluesky started life as an extension of Twitter in 2019, while Dorsey still headed the company as CEO. The new social media platform is decentralized (though not related to blockchain) in a manner similar to Mastodon Social. In addition, the Bluesky team developed the AT protocol, which allows people to host their own servers for the platform.

As mentioned, Bluesky is unrelated to blockchain technology but achieves decentralization through the AT Protocol’s federated network. Additionally, the team developed a new decentralized protocol to allow for better server portability for individual user accounts.

The Verge reports the decision to create a new decentralized protocol drew some criticism from Mastodon Social developers. “This is not an announcement of reinventing the wheel,” Mastodon’s official Twitter account tweeted. “This is announcing the building of a protocol that Twitter gets to control, like Google controls Android.”

The new platform should be the worldwide town square.

Dorsey famously considered Twitter to be “the de facto public town square” and provides an essential public service. According to TechCrunch, Bluesky offers a standard experience similar to Twitter, if a bit barebones. The biggest draw to Dorsey’s new Twitter alternative is the mobility between servers the AT Protocol enables. If users don’t like their current server, they can switch to a different one.

However, as Mastodon’s Twitter account quickly pointed out after Bluesky’s announcement, it is far from reinventing the wheel. “Hey @jack and @bluesky, feel free to check out these GitHub repositories,” Mastodon tweeted. “Might make this unique idea y’all have of a decentralized ‘Twitter’ a bit easier to bring to fruition.”
