Growing up, I’d always go over to my friend’s house and play video games. I was never very good at them; I regularly got out-played but still went back every week. There is something to be said for doing something over and over and not being good at it. Video games brought me a sense of camaraderie with my friends. We’d all be playing or cheering for the same objective. This is what Twitch is adding to the video game industry.

A gaming community

Part of the reason the video game industry took off as it did during the pandemic was because of this camaraderie. We were all locked away in our homes and needed some way to socialize. Twitch, the popular streaming platform for gamers, gave this to people. You can now watch your favorite streamers from Twitter, YouTube or wherever you started following them. Watching someone else play video games is now a major part of the video game industry.

A new outlet

While the streamer plays the game, a live audience can group chat with each other and the streamer. This creates a community in the streamer’s channel. It’s kind of like following your favorite sports team or watching a TV show at the same time as someone else. Twitch has given all those who love video games a new outlet.

Just chatting

And the number one genre on Twitch? “Just Chatting.” People have found ways to go onto this virtual platform and use it to socialize while they are separated from each other. People’s need to socialize comes out in every industry, and Twitch is just another example of that.
